FHLM AUGUST 2021 NEWSLETTER
Greetings
Hello from the U.S.! Yes, the U.S., I’m back on Furlough and that is why this August Newsletter is so very late! Sorry I was just so busy before and after I landed on U.S. soil on 10th September. Despite the lateness I still wanted you to hear about what we were up to in August. Enjoy!
Director’s Update:
Board Meeting: We had our rescheduled FHLM Board Meeting on 20th Aug. As you can imagine we had much to discuss and make decisions on. One of our major decisions was reviewing the applications of 5 potential SOAR Youth. We approved a pending SOAR Youth application from 2020, so we are pleased to welcome Pius Nsamba to the FHLM Family! We also discussed finances, and working toward some sustainability for the ministry through the rabbit project. Along with those items we shared about our youth, the ministries assistance of the SOAR Youth’s Families during the COVID lock-down and updating our programs. It was a fruitful meeting and I’m grateful for our Board of Directors.
Travels: In August I had to take rescheduled trips from June & July when we were in lock-down and couldn’t travel. On Aug 18th & 19th Oliver and I went to Entebbe to get her admission for technical school at Nagenda International Academy of Art & Design (NIAAD) completed. While there we toured the campus, and the hostels. We also meet with the head of the Fashion & Design Department in which she will be a part. We were able to meet up with David both of the days. Since he also attend NIAAD he showed her the towns around the school and introduced her several people. We pray that soon the technical schools will open up, as she is very excited to start her training and studies.
Aug 24th-26th Aunt Liz and I traveled to Ishaka to visit Joshua at Kampala International University western campus. It had been 2 years since I had visited him, so this trip was long overdue. Since he’s been there 2 years he was now able to give us a proper tour of the campus, his lecture rooms, and lab facilities. Liz also met with admissions because she has a young girl that will be attending KIU next year to study the same course as Joshua, Diploma in Pharmacy. We also visited with Joshua’s landlady and his off campus hostel, where he hosted us with tea. The university and the town has grown a lot in the last 2 years so I was pleased to see the progress.

SOAR Youth Update:
After the 6 weeks of lockdown in June & July, it was so wonderful to be back to the Centre in August and be with the youth again! Since schools were still closed we made the most of our time together with many wonderful and uplifting programs.
General Cleaning: We kicked off our 1st day back by cleaning up the Centre and compound! Since we had been away for 6 weeks everything was very dusty and dirty! We all pitched in and swept & mopped offices & floors, dusted book shelves, cleaned walls, doors and windows and removed cobwebs. When we were finished the Centre sparkled!! I’m thankful for such hard working youth!
Bible Study: Every Tuesday after lunch we had Bible study. We always begin with an opening prayer and then one of the youth leaders share. This month we were in the book of Ephesians. Here are the highlights and youth’s commentary from one of our studies. This study was on 10 Aug and Babirye led us through Ephesian 1:1-23:
- Babz: (vs. 1-2) The church from Ephesus was a faithful church and we are also to be faithful in Christ.
- Oliver: God chose us before the foundation of the world and He predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ. He chose us to praise and worship Him because He loves us. We are blessed because of that and adopted as God’s children. Before we became His we were like “street kids”.
- Eddy: (vs. 11-14) Since we are predestined—God planned for us and we are sealed in the Lord Jesus Christ. The seal attracts us to the father and the seal of the Holy Spirit controls our lives so we ought to be led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). We were given the Holy Spirit to be with us till the time of the redemption and we are the purchased possessions of God.
- Sarah: All things happen for good, a reason, and a purpose. God is a perfect planner and His Plan A is what He intends, not Plan B. Where there is a “His/story – Testimony = Glorifying God”
Painting Day: As the youths reached on 09th Aug, they began straight away with painting. Justine, Milly and Immy repainted the two seats black, and the wooden sofa and the table green. Eddy and William painted the bathroom a bright sky-blue color. The bathroom became adorable. Then after we had lunch, we had picture drawing and painting in the garage walls. It was great to see the youth’s artist side come out, as Immy painted a sunrise and mountains and Justine painted the saying “King of Kings” with a crown. The whole place looked fantastic and colorful!
Worship Days: It was so lovely to be in corporate worship and prayer time again! We had all been missing this, as churches are still closed. We kicked off our month and ended our month with Worship Days. What a blessing!
After much praise and worship we had some teaching of the Word of God. The theme for Aug 4th was The Holy Spirit. Eddy taught from Romans 8: 1-8 There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Holy Spirit. We pray to God to give us the Holy Spirit as He promised to us in Acts.
On the Aug 30th Justine led the teaching and she taught us about Believing! She asked us all “What do you believe in? Some said, Life and life enteral, the power of God, myself, and others said God because He owns my future. She shared about how God wants us to think about and be living for Him and His Word. We are to seek His plans for our lives and abide in Him.
She also shared the Benefits Of Believing and these various Scriptures that tell us about our benefits; Romans 10:9-11, 3:23-24, Romans 4:3 Psalm 69:29-34, Jeremiah 17:7. She ended with this statement and question. “It’s all about God!! He wants to be in the center of your life, in the middle and always in our lives because he has the best for us. Do you believe in God?”
Sports/Games: On Aug 5th the youth had games and sports, thou were few of the FHLM youths, Eddy, William, Milly and Immy. They competed in volleyball girls versed boys, unfortunately at the end of the game they were not competing. The after the played matatu. Everyone involved has an enjoyable day!
Crocheting: The youth had 2 days of crocheting. We were blessed to have a resident teacher in Sarah, our Social Worker. This time around she taught them how to make ponchos. The 1st day they began with learning how to make the first step of making crochet chains. Then they started by crocheting a neck of the poncho which was hard, but most had completed it by the end of the day. Some of the youth took their projects home to work on, so by the next day’s session they had gotten half of the base completed and by the end of the day most were finished. Though a few were still struggling with the finishes. Milly, Justine, and Babirye were so fast at crocheting they were able to “coach” those that needed assistance. All in all they really enjoyed learning this new crocheting skill. Justine said that she wants to keep practicing to prefect her technique.
Baking Day: The youths were excited about baking day on the 16th. The preparations began very soon before they had lunch and as soon as they were done with lunch, straight away they started baking. Eddy was Head Baker and he led in baking the jelly-roll. Justine, Immy and Sarah baked a “Busy day cake” flavored vanilla and chocolate. Eddy, William and Milly baked a “Yellow cake” flavored with strawberry. It was fun the whole day. After baking, everyone was eagerly waiting to taste the “Jelly-roll” and each cake that was made. It was another great skills learning day!
bela bulungi (good-bye):
We thank you ALL for your continued prayers, love, encouragement and support! May the Lord richly bless you ALL back 100 fold! Have a blessed day!
