FHLM April 2019 Newsletter
Sorry this is a bit late this month but I hope and pray that each of you had a blessed April and Happy Easter! Isaiah 53:3 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (NIV)
Directors Update
On 6th April Aunt Liz and I went up to Ndejje University to see Babirye and it was wonderful! We got to spend the whole afternoon with her and Liz’s guys. We went to lunch, walked around campus, sit and talked. It was so lovely to see her and catch up. She said that the semester finishes at the end of May.
I was blessed to once again be able to teach at Timothy Girl’s High School Evening Fellowship on 10th April. This month I taught on “Self-Esteem”. I focused on the 3-pilars of self-esteem; acceptance, significance and competence and how family, friends/peers, physical appearance and education influence each of them. But I centred on how God encompasses all three pillars and give His children unconditional love & acceptance, allows us to be safe & secure in Him, and helps us to know that as believers we are important and special. It was a very special evening and I was blessed to pass on this message to the girls! Unfortunately, this was the last fellowship of the term, so I won’t be with the girls again until June. I pray that God keeps that all safe and seeking Him during their 1st Term Holiday.
Resurrection Sunday & Easter Monday: We had a wonderful Resurrection Sunday service at Hilltop Church and after Rogers and I had 17 people up for Easter luncheon. Per usual the majority of the guests were made up of the FHLM Youth, but this year Jane & baby Elijah, along with our special guest, Pastor Darren were in attendance. Of course we had a big lunch and after we all played games; Phase 10, Uno, & Chess. It was a blessed day of food, fun, fellowship and celebration of our Lord Jesus’ Resurrection.
On Easter Monday Rogers, Darren and I went to one of Rogers’ church plants deep in a village in the district of Bukomansimbi. Though it was raining, people slowly came as Rogers led Praise & Worship and then gave a short teaching on foundation & growing in Christ, as the pastor and others set up a tent. When the tent was erected we all gathered under and sang more praise to the Lord. Pastor Charles spoke a bit and invited Rogers to say a few things and introduce Pastor Darren. Darren gave a powerful message from Hebrews 11 about how everything requires Faith! After Pastor Charles asked for me to come and speak. I taught from John 15: 4-8, building on Pst Darren’s message that in order to have Faith we must remain in Christ and stay close to Him, like a branch attached to the vine. God really blessed us with an amazing day as the Spirit moved in the hearts of the people in the village.
Youthz News
Learning & Fun: On the 5th Eddy got to go with his Food & Nutrition class on a field trip to Kampala to a bakery, yogart factory & a big supermarket at Freedom City shopping mall. I’m thankful that we can provide our youth with trips like this that gives them the practical side of what they are studying.
Per usual the youth had Back to Success on the first Saturday of the month, 6th of April. It was conducted by Joshua who assisted Aunt Faridah, who was not able to be around. Joshua helped them in revising math by practicing with them. He helped the senior 1 youth, William and Hanisha, in sets and fractions and helped them correct their work. Immy, the only senior 2 member, was helped with senior 1 statistics and given homework in fractions. For Eddy, who is in senior 3, he revised with him some numbers in Vector Geometry and statistics, then was given him homework about sketching curves. Lastly the secondary 4 candidates, Justine and Oliver, focused on statistics which always carries 12 marks on the national exams that they will be sitting for in Nov. He ended by giving them homework in statistics. After they finished and went home for their weekend (Written by; Joshua Kakeeto)
Movie Day: We had Movie with a Message on the 13th. We had a powerful pre-movie praise & worship session with our new drums!! God is good! After praise &worship we watched an inspiring movie, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”. It is a true story about a 13-year-old boy from Malawi that is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. He sneaks into the library and learns how to build a windmill to save his village from a famine. Here are some of the lessons our youth learnt through the movie:
- Oliver-Many people in the village were suffering but William was bold enough to not hide his talents that God has given him and use them to save his family and the rest of the village.
- Justine-William and his Father loved each other but when William wanted to take the bike, his Father was so angry. We need to learn to reconcile and have unity like William and his father did.
- Eddy-We should not despise anybody. We judge but God sees our minds and hearts. People in the village despised William but God had a plan and through William He helped the entire village.
- Alpha-William seeking knowledge even to the point of sneaking into school to read and learn was what we all need to do. He never stopped learning despite his situation. He also had faith in what God gave him and it turned to victory. We must have faith in every circumstance that we meet.
- Joshua-Everything with William happened in its time and it started small. The Word says not to despise the day of small beginnings. (Zechariah 4:10)
Good Friday Fun Day was held on 19th April. We started the day with board games in the Centres’ compound, as some of the youth came in to join the celebration of Jesus’ life! While we welcomed guests Jane, Alpha, Justine & Oliver prepared our lunch. After our wonderful lunch of Palau rice, cabbage, and sodas we had a few exercises of “follow the leader, leader” by Alpha Mukisa! All energized we jumped into games with 4 teams competing against each other in balloon bust, Bible Trivia, TV/Radio Ad singing, and tower building. What FUN!! But after all the fun and games we got down to the real reason we were celebrating, Jesus! Pastor Darren spoke to us from Galatians 2:20 and how Jesus redeemed all mankind for anyone that wanted to believe and how after 3 days He broke the curse. Darren went on to teach from Galatians 10:3 & Deuteronomy 28, about blessings and curses of the old covenant and the new that Jesus established with His life, death and resurrection. How the new covenant is one of freedom & of grace. What a gift from God! Praise Him!! What a glorious day!!
Babirye: All of the Ndejje University students had a short break over Easter week, but instead of coming back to Masaka, Babirye went with the campus Christian Union to Entebbe for an inter-varsity camp and outreach.
Joshua and I were on another university visit on 26 April, this time to Kampala International University. We praise God that he was admitted for a Diploma in Pharmacy studies. He will start on 25th August at the Western Campus in Ishaka. Thank you to all who stood with us in prayer for him!
End of 1st Term was on 26th April, so now Oliver, Justine, Eddy, Immy, Hanisha and young William are all out on Holiday for the next 4 weeks. They are all looking forward to our Holiday Programs.
Nurture Children’s’ Home Outreach: On the 30th we kind of did it differently, we made two groups, a group of girls and that of boys. We got the theme of the day ‘Temple of God’, from 1 Corinthians 6:19, so the female Aunties had to share this theme and scripture with the girls and the male uncles with the boys.
I briefly threw more light about this scripture to the girls and then Uncle Alpha did on the side of the boys. After everyone had got an idea of the scripture all Aunties explained to the young girls what it meant to be a temple of God, be pure, and a daughter of God. Each one of them asked the young girls some questions at the end of their teaching.
These are some of the questions which the young girls tried to answer; what does God expect from the temple? Peace one of the young girls said that the temple of God should be clean. Nakagwa said that the temple of God should worship God. Hawa said that the temple of God shouldn’t abuse their friends.
Another question was, what do you think God feels when His temple does good. He feels good and happy, little Ann answered. Then the other question was, when you make God feel good and happy, what does He do? He blesses you, Peace answered. He gives you a long life Nakagwa added. These little ones had amazing answers.
