FHLM OCTOBER 2020 NEWSLETTER

Greetings from Masaka everyone! I hope this newsletter finds you all healthy and happy! As you will read we have had a lot going on this month and God has been so faithful to us! Hebrew 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Director’s Update:

Praise Reports: We want to thank everyone that has been praying for Babirye’s Mum and Justine’s Aunt. They are both on the mend. Aunt Prosey is now walking without crutches. We praise God for the healing!

Back to School: Since Eddy is a Secondary 4 Candidate this year he was able to start back to school on 15th Oct for Term 2, along with the secondary 6 candidates. His school Masaka Secondary has over a thousand candidate students, so safety is of the upmost importance. They have built a gated wall to separate the school into boarding and day students only. Each side has its own teachers, class rooms, staff rooms, dining hall etc. They are being very strict with each student required to wear a mask, have personal hand sanitizer and to follow the schools SOPs. Eddy is going to school Monday – Saturday from 8:00am till 5:20. Please continue to keep him in prayer. Thank you.

Centre Happenings:

We now have 4 rabbits; Mr. Solomon Rabbit and his wives. The oldest wife is now pregnant and due by the end of Oct. This is very exciting for us all and especially William as he is very faithful in his care and upkeep of them.

Also we are getting a little “make-over” of the front of the Centre. Uncle William and young William have been working hard to put up a Veranda Cover. Back in August the FHLM Board suggested that we have the cover put up so the youth could be outside for lunches, study and also sit there to get fresh air. I had been praying on how to make this happen and then Harlan Christian Youth Centre sent some funds. Now the request has become a reality. Thank you HCYC and God for answering prayers!

Youthz Update:

Bible Quiz: We ended the month of Sept with a fun day of learning and laughter. We had two teams: Shalom and Jesus that competed against each other. I was the moderator and time keeper. As I asked a team a Bible question they had 1 minute to answer or the other team could steal. Then we had “rapid fire” rounds where I called out a Bible chapter and verse members of each team had to find the verse in the Bible and read it. The first team member to find received a point. This helped Team Jesus catch up, as they were lagging in the points, but in the end Team Shalom won. Of course they were all winners because they were learning the Bible!! The youth really enjoyed this quiz day and asked to have it on next month’s schedule!

Monthly Featured Youth: Milly Nassunna started with FHLM in Feb 2020 and in S2 (8th Grade) at Masaka Secondary School. She is currently living with her widowed mother, who has lost 2 husbands. She is the eldest child of the 2nd marriage and there are 5 living siblings. Her mother is also caring for 2 of her late brother, who died of HIV, children. The mother is a substance farmer and the elderly grandmother also helps with family expenses.

On the 7th we celebrated Milly’s 15th Birthday! She is a fair student because of missing school, but she has very good English. We see lots of potential in her. She became born again in Primary 7 and attends Redeemed Church in Kitabazi. Lately she has taken to singing, learning new songs and sharing the Word of God with her neighbours. She hopes to be a primary teacher someday. We are in need of a full time school sponsor for her fees and school requirements of $30.00 per month.

Babirye & Joshua: Since COVID is continuing Ndejje University is making special arrangements for its Finalist Students. That said all of the continuing students, including Babirye, were notified that they had to go pick up all the items that were left in their dorm rooms. Babirye travelled up to Kampala on the 18th and then up to school to gather her things. Public transport is still very costly as the taxis are still only allowed half of their passenger capacity, but God provided.

Also both she and Joshua have been notified that they will be starting E-Learning in November. They will access their universities portals and download their assignments from there. This means that we had to find a solution for them to access the internet. The board decided the Centre will become an E-learning centre for them and the ministry will purchase a Mi-FI Device. We will load monthly GBs and they will be able to move forward with learning. We thank God in advance for His provision for this.

Tuesday Bible Studies: We changed Bible study up this month. I taught 5 Sessions from the “Overcomer Bible Study”, based on the Kendrick brother’s movie Overcomer. The study looks at what you allow to define you. Each week I led the youth through a power point and discussed such topics as; Who are You?, You are Broken, You are Chosen, You Surrender, and You Declare. The youth have testified that the study and the 3 days of “Bible Study homework” have helped them to grow in Christ and see who they are and where God is taking them. We praise God for this study!

Movie Day: Since we have all day we were able to have another “Movie Double Feature”. This month we watched Reggie’s Prayer and War Room. I was prompted by God to show these movies because He impressed upon me how important prayer is and especially now. I shared this with the youth and also said that we as believers need to step up our “fighting” in prayer! I emphasized that we need to be deep in prayer for the world, family, political leaders, and our nations. Here are a few things that the youth leaned from the movies:

Hanisha: We have to be prayerful and pray for people in need. We also have to love others and encourage them about being disciplined.

Justine: We should know that whatever sin we have committed, it can be forgiven by the grace of Jesus. Also we should not boast so much in some victory we achieve because none of the victory is our effort. Instead glorify God!

Milly: We have to seek the Lord whether in trouble or in times of happiness, because Reggie sought the Lord in times of trouble and the Lord fought for him.

Life-Skill Days:

Baking Day: On the 2nd Aunt Grace taught us all how to make Daddies!! They are a tasty, little nugget of fried dough that we covered in cinnamon sugar. They are very yummy! Grace also showed us how to bag the cooled daddies and seal them with a candle so they can be sold. This was a great learning experience and showed us how we can make ourselves and create our own small business like Aunt Grace has started.

Uncle Alpha Talk: This month Alpha was back speaking to the youth on the 16th about Media. The youth here in Uganda, like other countries around the world, are besieged with media; FaceBook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, videos, TV, radio. All these media outlets could lead them astray or they can get both positive & negative comments that could affect them. He showed them how they can be discerning with the things they see on social media, and even the news. He said, “What you receive is what you give out in your action and even language. But you are given a choice to choose either the media things that are criminal & evil or good & God glorifying.” His key verse was Romans 12:1..present your body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Day Out: We are again instilling in our youth the need to conserve and recycle so the 23rd we had a day off-site and went to Eco-Brick Recycle Centre. Our goal was to learn more about conservation to have some skills on how to protect our environment from hazardous toxics. We took 1 of the 3 big bags of plastics that we had collected from our Community Clean-up Day, to be recycled.  We were welcomed by Daniel, who gave us introduction about the Eco Brixs Recycle Center. Who is Eco Brixs and how they were established to solve community problems in relation to environmental conservation. Dan said that our youth are part of the solution too and we all can put our hands together to protect nature created by God. He quoted from the book of Genesis where God gave us authority to take care of His creation. Daniel also talked with the youth about the 4Rs that are used as conservation methods at Eco Brixs Recycle Centre.

  • Reuse, using plastics again for another purpose after being deposited like, reusable containers, flower vessels, bottle bricks among others.
  • Recycle, reprocessing plastics into another thing after use that is useful.
  • Reduce, making less use of plastics.
  • Refuse, denying the use of plastics.

These 4Rs along with other information helped to educated us all! He then shared how we can be part of the Way-Forward to curb this problem. We ended the day by seeing the machines they use when recycling. We also got to see how they make shapes from the shredded plastic. We got chance to make a plastic holder for the face shield. Then Grace, Hanisha, William, and I made a pledge, as representatives of FHLM, to help recycle plastic waste and to encourage others to do the same. What a great day!!

Games Day: On the 28th we had a fun day filled with games; Monopoly in the morning and after lunch we played volleyball! William was the big winner in Monopoly—Mr. Money. In the afternoon they played 8 games of volleyball with Team Jesus being the overall winning team. We are thankful to God for the Centre’s beautiful compound that allows us to have days like these, with so much laughter and joy!

PRAYER REQUESTS:

  • Please pray for our Annual Youth Outreach & Education Trip. This year will are going to Kabale District in South-western Uganda from 15-21 Nov. We will be ministering at orphanages and with churches in the area. Please pray for those that we will be ministering to, that God will prepare their hearts. Please also pray for God’s protection, health, guidance, and provision for us all.
  • Please pray for Uganda and safety of the candidates students, as COVID19 cases and deaths continue to rise in the country. Current Updates as of 28 Oct: 434 new cases, 12,201 cumulative cases to date, 7,461 recoveries, 108 deaths. Also that those that are still waiting for funds for schools fees be granted by God so they can continue their studies.

We are very thankful to God for His faithfulness to us and the ministry as a whole. We are grateful for all that continue to pray, support, and give to the ministry. May God richly bless you all and continue to guide your lives.
